Online Cloud Collaboration - spec me software

I am looking for some sort of software that enables collaboration over the cloud.. something similar to dropbox but would be ideal if it had instant messaging built in and can of course be used by multiple people.

Does anyone know of anything that fits the bill? Any suggestions appreciated.

Oh and ideally it needs to be free!

Theres defiantly a google for this, but i cant remember if it was shut down or not.

Google docs maybe?

I did think about that, but it's not just for documents that this is required. There would be other files needing to be shared from specific applications.

I believe Google docs is basically a cloud version of Office.
