Hi all

I'm looking for recommendations for places who offer good online courses for learning things like programming languages. They need to offer a tutor who you can contact by e-mail at the least (online chat preferred), a programme of study to follow and preferably a qualification at the end of it.

Thanks in advance

Most online places are going to be either geared towards business customers (read very expensive) or home users (read very expensive and most probably very basic).

Why don't you buy a couple of books and work through them in your own time? Much cheaper. Once you feel confident you can then take the relevant exams. Most books will contain exercises for you to complete which more often than not are the sort of things you'll be asked in an exam.

If you get stuck or need something clarified there's thousands of places online you can get help, including this very forum.

I have plenty of books on the topics I wish to learn but the problems are that not having the person available ask questions of immediately (forums are great but a quick response (within a few seconds) doesn't happen and it can hamper learning for me). Plus having a set time frame in which to do something motivates me to do it. Setting goals of my own doesn't work.

I understand. I am the same when it comes to motiviation - if somebody else doesn't set a deadline I kind of let things go on and on.

I think you may be expecting a little much from online courses. The points you've raised suggest to me you'd be better of attending a college or university, you can even do degrees online these days - but they tend to be very expensive and require many years of solid commitment.

Most companies that offer online courses are going to be of the type you see advertised on ITV Daytime, you're not going to get any indepth help.

Q:"I'm having difficulty understanding when to pass by reference and when to pass by value."

A:"Please re-read Section 5 in your course book."
