A friend would like to have remote access to his files, however due to the location of his offices the internet has a dreadful upload speed meaning it takes an ages to download them when he's off site.

Could anyone suggest a company who will host his files (mainly word docs) and look after backups etc.

He needs around 50GB space.

Cheers :)

What sort of budget is he looking at ?

Also does he want a proper industrial set up or something pony and consumer orientated?

Budget would be around £100 a month. I should be able to get this raised if I can justify it.

Personally I'd like something industrial but that would mean me having to support anything he doesn't understand, and with him being none IT literate it needs to be as 'early learning' as possible.

You don't need a fraction of that budget. £100 a month would buy a dedicated server that could serve that sort of use 30x over.

I'd suggest Dropbox or Jungle Disk. I've not used the latter much but the former is nice and simple and tracks revisions.

I'd say both of those fall into the "pony and consumer orientated" category but would also meet the easy to use requirements.

Key points I would look into though would be:

- Security
- Data protection policies
- Their backup system, how long they hold files for, do you have access to past versions?

I suppose the first two might not be of any concern to you depending on what sort of business he is in.

Clearly you don't know what you're talking about.
Jungle Disk is a frontend to Amazon S3 or the Rackspace Cloud and you can't really get much better than. Dropbox has a massive user base which makes a good service all the more important.

Any real business won't be using an online storage provider, though cloud storage gets used a lot as the final destination. So all these online storage providers with stock photos of office workers are meaningless.

The data will consist of word documents and jpg's. The company writes reports so it's not database driven or anything demanding.

As they work all over Europe the MD want a central hub where everything can be accessed.

They've only got to 40GB of data after 10 years!
