Online/offline MMORPG style games in the future?

I was sitting playing Test Drive Unlimited on the Xbox 360 recently and started wondering about how it worked, you can play both online and offline, flicking between them as you want, the game is still playable in either mode unlike MMORPG (by the very definition). What I was wondering though is what about an adventure game (DAOC, UO, WoW, GW etc) that allowed the same. Internet down? no problem just load it up in offline mode, I'm not saying it'd be a way to play the game from start to finish but I remember my friend whinging constantly when servers were down for maintenance because they couldn't play.

Granted there would be huge security and hacking issues because data for characters etc would be held locally but it's surely worth someone looking at. I like the idea anyway. :)

Thoughts?

How would an online game work offline? The whole idea is player interaction?
To work it would have to be a pretty linear npc grind or the game would fall apart.

IF TDU is holds its Save data cleint side on the PC then it will be hacked within a week. The reason it works on the 360 is casue your average Joe can't hex edit his save game file so that he has all the cars and all the acheivements.

The MMo part in TDU is flakey to say the least as well, which is a shame.

I suppose instancing in mmo's is much the same thing at the moment, but the server still retains control of your character data. That's probably the only reason it's not done - there'd have to be a local copy of your character data which would be uploaded to the server the next time you connected. It's just far far too open to hacking.

That's actually pretty much the standard MMORPG levelling layout right there :)

Anyway, as said the only real reason you cant continue off line for some solo grinding is security. It's a decent idea tbh, would have been nice to drop out of DAoC from time to time & just plough at mobs without having to be social :)

Isnt the new LOTR going to have offline levelling system? Im sure i heard it somewhere. If you ask me I think its going to be a cheaters paradise if thats the case.

No it's just that you level when you're not there. You can set a skill to level up and walk away (Like EVE).
