My group of mates are thinking of a small business venture, and iv been asked to knock up a website in which people can browse certain items and purchase them online. iv never done this before, iv had small doses of PHP and SQL combined but my knowledge is basic.

Can anybody give me ideas as to what im looking for? it would be a lot easier if there are pre-built ones on the web that can be intergrated onto my website, that would be a lot better.

if youve not dabbled in php/mysql properly then make sure you use a prebuilt system for shopping carts etc as you wouldn't want any nastyness occuring and you being blamed!
you can use things like zencart which is all prebuilt and a paypal plugin or protx plugin for secure payments :)

oScommerce appears quite widely used. Looking at the size of the forums associated with it no doubt they'll be plenty of help/support available.

Oscommerce is a good shout, but if your new to it and wish to use it then id suggest cre loaded. It is oscommerce but with all the contributions already loaded. What i mean is the tools that make life easier are preloaded into cre as opposed to oscommerce.
Cubecart is a very beginner friendly shopping cart, but you soon find out that there are costs that you need to end up paying like license removal skins(templates) that need purchasing and mods that are necessary again costing money.
Either one will serve you well and if you choose a webhosting package that has cPanel then you will find a script package called fantastico which installs oscommerce, zencart or cubecart automatically for you.
