only 1 ram module being used???

i have an Amilo laptop that has 1gb stick of ram and works OK but when i put another 1gb module into the second slot it is not seen in windows :confused:

i have run Hirens boot cd and got system info and it shows both modules but only using the 1 memory stick, i tried a 2gb stick but the laptop would not boot

any ideas?

edit:

both slots work with 1 stick, the laptop should take up to 2gb.

edit 2: got into bios and that only shows 896mb useable ram :-(

Yes they need to be matching pairs mate or they can cause strange things as you have seen.

1st time i've found this though, i have had plenty of laptops and have put different size/ configurations in and they have been fine.

I've seen it only once before out of the 1000's of laptops i've worked on, pretty odd probably a bios compatibility issue.

i found another matching module in my laptop and the amilo is now working with 2gb of ram.
