Only formatted my PC last week after fitting my new graphics card in and already its playing up.

Doesn't load up the explorer shell properly. After a cold reboot it opens up onto the desktop but it doesnt fully load all the device drivers and then when I try and click on quicktray icons, explorer bar or the start menu it just bleeps at me. I have to open task manager, close the explorer.exe and then run a new explorer for anything to work.

I'm pretty clued up on spyware, adware and viruses and use NOD32, Spybot, Adaware, Registry Mechanic and run them every week.

I just can't think what it would be :(

Sounds like too much pron tbh. ;) Seriously sounds like something is stopping explorer from running properly, I'v had this happen to me, was usually a driver or program stopped it from working.

You tried updating all your drivers and whatnot? :)

Most of them, only one I haven't done is the WiFi usb adaptor. Will try that lunchtime. I'd do it now but am scared that once I reboot I wont be able to VNC back on because the explorer shell wont run winvnc service again (I am at work at the moment u see)

try disabling automatic updates

some people are having problems where svchost takes up 100% of the cpu for ages, i dont know how to overcome it

either your computer sucks or you suck, windows XP is not problematic.

wrong side of the bed this morning!

I work in IT on Helpdesk Support. I know my way around XP. Something like this seems to always get me stumped. I know all the places to check, things to do etc. but it doesnt help. Nothing in event viewer to show any problems.

nothing wrong with windows xp, its a very stable platform IMO. Something wrong with your computer hardware/settings or somethings downloaded itself into windows thats borking your o/s

I agree with it being stable but it hasnt been of late for me. I am aware it may be a hardware issue or software but as it has only been a week I dont think it'll be software ie spyware or anything. I pretty clued up about virus/spyware etc due to the nature of my job.

Like I said, it's something thats got me stumped. I have tried original equipment drivers and latest drivers for all hardware.

it only seems to fail from cold. after a few restarts it comes back to desktop fine as if nothings happened.
