Hi,

My PC will only boot when I set the CMOS to clear and switch it on, otherwise it does not boot at all, hangs like there is no ram or something?

Does anyone know what this could be?

Sure your not reading it wrong?

Maybe your thinking PIN 1+2 are CLEAR and 2+3 are normal when in fact its the other way round????

Yep sounds like that to me. Do you mean you have to:

1) Clear it
2) Set CMOS back to normal
3) Boot

or

1) Leave it in (what you think is) the CMOS clear position
2) Boot while the CMOS is still in the "clear" position

If it's the latter then I think it's just confusion as to which way around the CMOS jumpers are.

Yes, most boards go on this :-

You have 3 pins ( Numbered 1 2 and 3 - no surprise )

And running the board NORMALLY will mean that a jumper will go across pins 1+2 and there will be nohtign on pin 3

Now, in order to clear the CMOS, you need to power it off, take thejumper from Pins 1+2 and put the jumper on to pins 2+3... Leave it there for a second or two, then take it off and put it back onto pins 1+2

Then you switch your PC back on.

I assume that you have not put the jumpers back to their original position.

In fact, taking what you say into account, I know for a fact thats what you have done.

I have been having this for some time with a p.o.s. computer that hasnt worked propperly from the day i bought it.

Replacing the batteries did nothing and then it started stalling followed by completely freezing. Now even resetting cmos doesnt help. Fans whirl and nothing!

Replaced my motherboard with same make & model and no luck :(

Good luck getting it sorted!

Maybe its the processor/memory/graphics card/psu?

Agreed... Its almost definitely NOT a motherboard issue then.

yeah almost unless he has the worst luck ever and got a doa second mobo.

I've tried booting without the gfx card in and it still sits there and does nothing (except the fans whirl which would nice on a hot day, if i wasnt in scotland that is). Even took processor out and it was happy as a bee whirling away quietly. Only thing i can't test is the PSU, which was replaced not so long back (had pc issues with it turning off and PSU fans dying,,, strangely that never stopped once replaced).
