Only one to buy XP this week?

Businesses always lag behind when it comes to updating an OS. I agree that a lot won't. I was on about the 'General' PC user. 'Joe Public'.
The majority of Joe Public won't be buying a new PC before the end of the year.

I have just built two pc's and put XP on both. Vista is largely an unknown while everybody knows what XP is like. I will not be buying Vista, ever. It is a DRM infected monstrosity that leaves you with no rights at all. Have a read of this.

Have you even read that yourself? It will make no difference to you.

Are you saying this year will be unlike any other so far? The majority of the public don't buy a new machine every year.

Yea, but how many people will buy a new PC this year? How many will want to now that there is a new OS coming out? Shall i get a Crystal Ball? :)

The PC adverts on TV make people want to buy a new PC. Adverts in a Paper make people buy PC's. Vista will make people want to buy a PC. Kids will want new PC's. It is an on-going thing. More PC's are being sold on a day to day basis than ever before. And when someone's friend has a brand new PC with 'Vista' on it they will want it too!

You're overestimating how much people give a damn about their computer, if it works, they won't change it.

Have you had any experience with how the general public buy computers? They replace them when they break, and only buy extra ones for kids going off to uni / needing them for school work etc. Sure people may like the look of Vista, but the majority of the public won't be using it by this time next year . The market for upgrades is tiny as well, I think in three years of working retail I sold under 10 Windows XP boxes. The public buy software once, they don't upgrade it unless it's something like Norton which nags them to. They use the OS that comes with their computer unless their "friend who knows about computers" installs a pirate copy for them.

10!! Where do you trade, North Pole!! Lol

I find that these days people want the best, now. Thier friends have it so they want it. The days when people make do are gone. If it is new, they want it.

I can see that you have a very skewed view of things. Let's just have a look at the published website hit stats at the end of the year to see if the majority of the public have bought new computers and Vista upgrade boxes.

You for one will be surprised at how many 'Have' sold!

Edit: Just checked my records and last year i upgraded 15 PC's to XP Home, 12 to XP Pro, Built 27 New XP Pc's.

You only sold 10 in 3 years!

Are you implying that the sales of Windows Vista not preinstalled on a PC (eg, OEM preorders) are anything other than a minute amount of the market?

Edit: As a sideline, what license is it that lets you run a lower version of Windows? Is that only with site licenses or can anyone do it? Could be useful if you need to buy an OS now but don't want to risk it with something totally new.

And you worked in a computer repair type shop. I worked in a retail department store. We sold thousands of computers, but the interest in buying a Windows packaged product was so small as to be insignificant.
