Afternoon All, Hoping someone will be able to help me with an issue I'm having.

I have an Asus P5Q Se Motherboard that will only recognize half my RAM. I have 3 sticks, 2 x 1GB and 1 x 4GB. I have tried these in every possible combination you could think of, on there own, together, in different channels so on and so forth. Any RAM that is installed it will only recognize half the capacity. (e.g 1GB installed shows in bios as 512mb.)

I have updated the bios to the latest revision, checked the "Max Memory" settings under the Msconfig tab and also reseated the CPU.

Can anyone offer any advice?

Thanks

Ive gave it a quick once over but cant see any. Ill take another look shortly to see if Ive overlooked any. Is this a usual sign of bent pins? Cause that's all i need!

yes because the memory controller is in the cpu,so any pins that don't touch will cause you to lose memory ect

2 x 1GB and 1 x 4GB

^^ this is more likely your problem, mixing different sizes, you should try and use three sticks of equal size memory so 3x1gb or 3x2gb or 3x4gb ect

it will cause the board to run in single channel or dual channel mode,to check look in cpu-z/memory tab

Yeah the odd sizes are a bit of a pain, but even when using single or dual of the same size it still has problems. Ill check out the Socket & CPU a little later today and see if I can find anything.
Thanks for your help.

If your using a bolt through cooler make sure you are not over tightening it as this causes warping of the board and hence the pins not to contact correctly.

Is the lose on one channel only???

Hi guys, Ive tried the 4gb stick in all slots but its never recognised as more than 2gb. I also tried another stock cooler which i was able to get my hands on but this still had the same results.

I took the cpu off late yesterday and was able to get it under a microscope, there are 2 contacts which look like they have become corroded. I went and brought some cleaner for gold contacts but this does not seem to have made any difference. Unfortunately it looks like a knackered CPU. Ill try it another pc when I get a chance and see if it does the same.

Thanks for the suggestions guys.

Hello,
Did you ever find a solution to the problem?
I have an old machine which started to do that recently half of the memory size is recognize on the P5Q_PRO. HypeX 4Gb Kingston all recognized as 2Gb
Also that memory type is now really expensive so should I bin it all!
Best
