Behind you... Naked!
Hmmm...

This one has bugged the hell out of me, and there must bne a simple reason, but Im lost?

I have rebuild my Server, ready to turn it into an actual server rather than a very expensive WinAmp player.

I have built a unit for it, and I am using a KVM with super massive long VGA and USB Cables to control it. Everything is working as it should be, however, I just cannot for the life of me, get teh server to access the internet?

When I view the NETWORK through the Server, I can see and full access both my main Desktop PC, and my daughters PC, and I can see the Netgear router.

The Netgear router, is a full modem router, however, I an only using that for getting the Media PC, the Skybox, and the XBOX onto the network, and I am NOT using the WAN or the Modem ports, just the 4 Ethernet ports so its acting lik a 4 port switch right now. It works 100% fine for those devices.

My main Router is an ASUS 55 thingy ( GET NAME )

The Main Router is at 192.168.1.0
The Netgear is at 192.168.1.1 and is NOT assigning IPs

And the entire network works exactly as it is supposed to, with all the machines all seeing each other and having full access to the internet as I want them to.

Now, the server has 3 Ethernet ports and I have also plopped in a Wireless PCIE card into it.

One port is the LAN Diagnostics thingy, and of the other 2, I have disabled one for now, and I am only using PORT 1

Now, on the ASUS, its WIRELESS networks are called LAN-AUTO ( the 2.4Ghz one ) & LAN-05 ( The 5Ghz one ).

One thing that I have noticed that the Ethernet is seeing, and this is a really weird one, but it sees the network and sort of connects to it, and calls the network LAN-AUTO and yet thats the name of the WIFI LAN not an ethernet one? Why is that?

I just cannot get it to connect to the internet, and it can only see 2 machines so why is that?

Anyone have any ideas, or need to know any specific info?

I have also done a fresh install just on the off-chance and this made no difference!

Just to check, is the server being assigned an IP? Gateway and subnet settings all correct? Which router is the server connected to?

Yes, it IS being given an IP. Otherwise it would not see half the network.

Physically, the server is at this time, connected to a homeplug, BOTH Routers are also connected to HomePlugs, and when I check, the Server is indeed connected to the ASUS ( MODEM ROUTER ) as it should be.

As I said, the Netgear is only setup as a switch because I only need its 4 LAN ports to connect the MediaPC, SKY and XBOX to the Network.

Why have you got Ethernet and a wireless card in the server? If you don't need the wireless, take it out or disable it.

Ok, I have plopped the WIreless card in there purely because I was failing to get the Ethernet to play.

Yes, absolutely I disable it and/or the Ethgernet to try to get one or the other to play??? They should not affect each other anyway... The thing is, that I get the same results whether I use wired or wireless??

Right now though, I have removed the card, and I am ONLY using one Ethernet port ( Port 1 ) and I am no better off.

I plan on having my internet accessed all purely through the Server, and so the server will be the one and only PC that is connected to the Modem, and the entire network will be connected to the Server's Port 2.

What I will do tomorrow, is dig out another Modem, and try to get JUST the server to talk to the internet and see where I go on that and then add the netowk to the server... That is what the plan is to be anyway, its just that while I am setting up the Server, I wanted to do it the way I am doing in now first and get it all setup before I did tyhe rework of the ntwork because there is a hell of a lot of the stuff

I might have a good excuse to dig out my Dreytek again though!

So I'm wondering ...

Your router is at 192.168.1.0 and your server can't access the Internet, other machines can. 192.168.1.0 is a valid address in a 192.168.0.0/16 network but not a 192.168.1.0/24 network. Have you got the rest of the machines on /16 and the server on /24?

The problem is that 192.168.1.0 is not a valid IP address. Change it to 192.168.1.1, bump the Netgear to 192.168.1.2 and everything should work.

Okay, there's a possibility that he's done something odd with the mask which might allow it, as you say, but if he's using the standard 255.255.255.0 then an address ending in 0 is not valid. I suspect having the Netgear router on 1 is what's allowing the network to function. Anyway, it's an easy and quick fix to get back to the industry standard and know that there aren't any potential problems lurking.

Maybe try swopping out the netgear router for an actual switch and see what happens?

Or power everything off then power up the router, then the modem, the server, then the pc's?

What is this 'server' and what OS is it running?
How's it configured, and how are you planning on having it configured at act as the gateway for the rest of the network?
What does IPCONFIG tell you?

Is your server Windows? I had an odd problem with a windows box accessing a 1.255 address the other day. Windows is too straight laced with network and broadcast addresses.

**Linux is fine though

Hello all.

Sorry, I messed up... The Gateway IS 1.1 not 1.0... Dont know why I said that... Lots of numbers probably?

The ASUS ( Modem Router ) is 192.168.1.1
The Netgear is 192.168.1.2

So spank me with a wet kipper on the bottom for that!

Ok, where am I?

Ok, well today, my daughter hjad a moan at me cos he PC has stopped accessing the internet, my sons xbox too, so something has definitely gone wide with it?

I had a look at teh Server ,and its Ethernet cable is going into a DLink Switch, but rather than green, it was orange.
So, I decided that enough was enough, Im getting nowhere and so, I have decided to simply stop everything and start it all back up bit by bit in order to see where I am going wrong, but this time, I started at the server, and I had ONLY the server connected directly to the router and NOTHING else. I even disabled the WIFI on it.

I got it on instantly with no issues as I should have done.

I then ran it through the Switch, but again directly to the modem and so far so good.

I then connectedt he switch to the homeplug so that the house was now able to connect... Again, still good.

My main PC is NOT connected to the HomePlugs, but instead, it WAS also directly connected to the router, but now, It was connected to the DLink switch.

good.

I then turned on each machine and between each mchine, I did a few simple tetss and gave it some time top make sure that it was all still running fine... My daughters PC, my sons PC and then his XBOX, and all of these all ran just fine.

The SkyTV, MediaPC and my xbox are all connected to the netgear, and so it was time to start that one up, and I had also reset it also, and I manually set that to 192.168.1.2 and the gateway to 1.1 and instantly, they were all working just fine.

The only thing left was to re-enable the WIFI and I changed the names and passwords to help reset those, and then the printer too!

So far so good... Everything seems to be working as it should.

I am trying to work out what went wrong and I just cannot understand why?

Maybe it got mixed up in some way, or maybe I had something connecting that was disabling it, I just dont know?\

One thing it did do that did irritate me was that the name of one of the Wireless networks, was LAN-AUTO and the server kept saying that it was connected to this, when it was actually using Ethernet and the WIFI was disabled? - that was irritating.

But its working and thats the importnt thing.

Oh and I was and still am using Windows 7 64 Bit, however, I do have a legit copy of Sindows Server 2008 and I intend on using that ... I might as well, its a server Mobo.

Oh, and one giggle I have... I have not bothered to put a sound card into it, and I will if I can be bothered to, just use a USB one. However ,today I was doing my usual messing about being bored and I threw on a load of games ( I know I know ) and then I tried to play them and I realised that I have no sound card and being a lazy git, I could not be bothered to move 5 feet towards the server to plug in a USB dongle, but thankfully, Im using a G510s Keyboard that has a sound card built into it!

Happy days!

Im an idiot.

Thanks guys.
