Behind you... Naked!
I have a HP ZD8000 pavilion that recentlky decided to stop working properly.

After some digging up, I find that this is a fairly common issue, but its not really fixable it seems?

Anyway, the basics are, that if I install the ATI Drivers, it shows a white screen, no drivers and its fine.

Linux is ok with it and runs it fairly well and fairly fasty but only at 1024x768... The screen is capable of 1440x900

Now, I have been looking for a good distro to use with this, Most ubuntu based distros run great for sot of the time, but they are fairly buggy and slow.

I have found that Open SUSE 10.x is not only fast, but its very reliable too and its a dream to use, Now, I have gone through a great many distros and versions of those distros and I have not yet found one that is easy to setup my screen with, and yet SuSE 10.x just did it as default???

Why is this?

Annoyingly, 10.x wont play nicely with my wireless adapter and Suse 11.x fails to play ball at all with it, instead giving me a black screen instead????

Any ideas.

Sounds like that one distro has some tweaks specifically for that video card, or maybe it's just luck. As you don't tell us what video card or network adapter, help might be a bit thin on the ground.

Sorry, I did mention the Model of Laptop which all use the same hardware, so I assumed wrongly, but alas ... You're right.

Its using the ATI Mobility X600 128MB and the Broadcom B43xx

Its trying to find the balance it seems with this particular machine, where older distros wont be able to use the Wireless, but newer distros that do or can use the wireless ( Its built into Kernal 2.6.17 apaprently ) but then I wont be able to use the video???

For example

Ubuntu 8.4 seems to let me play at 1024x768 and it will do the wireless drivers for me ( As long as I set those up over Wirede Ethernet )

8.10 however hangs in about 10 to 15 seconds after it starts to install, and it has never been bale to evn do a live trial.
This is the same with SuSE 11, MAndriva, Fedora, Ubuntus over 8.4, gentoo, knoppix, slax, Sabayon... Few more... I have tried them all.

So, if I could just get a buntu to let me use 1440x900 then I recon Id be ok, or SuSE 10.3 with the Broadcom, again Ill be happy, but not managed to get that yet?

No no... 1024x768 is fine. Thats what it gets right now.

The LapTop is capable of getting 1440x900 but only with SUSE 10.x

I want to be able to get it to use 1440x900 in ubuntu

Either that or get it to access my wireless in SuSE anyway.

I dont know whats needed in the xorg.conf file anyway, other than to try and re-install SUSE and have a look at ITS file... Hang on, I will try a live on this PC perhaps?

Its currently got VESA for its Video, but just DEFAULT for the monitor

WTF? I wrote a huge reply that half went awol

Ok, not typing all that again, so the basics are:-

I installed the ATI Drivers again, and then recovered from the problems and it seems to have left the good 1440x900 resolution in there.

If this is the case, then its cured it even if its a long way round, but Im 50-50 on it.

I will get you the xorg.conf file as well anyway ok?

Hmm.. No, now I cant get into it at all now?

I try fixing the X config but not happening?

I can get into the recovery section, so, I wonder if its possible to remove the ATI junk?
Anyone know?

Im not much on DEB stuff, so, how would I know what to find and remove?
