Only using a 1080p region of a 1440p monitor?

I was looking to buy a 32 inch tv for my bedroom, but realised that I could just buy a 32 inch monitor, since I have good speakers for my pc anyway and my bed faces the computer.

However I don't think I'm going to be comfortable gaming on a 32 inch monitor. Since the monitor I have been looking at (Samsung LS32D850T if anyone knows if its any good?) is 1440p, I was thinking that I could just use the pixels in a 1080p region of the monitor when I was gaming.

Seems like no one has ever wanted this because I can't find anything online. To be clear, I don't want to just use 1080p resolution stretched to fill the screen, I want it native in a region. I've tried to do this with 720p on my current 1080p monitor, but I can't make it work with AMD's Catalyst Control panel.

Anyone know a piece of software that could do this, since I see no reason it wouldn't be possible?

Depends on the monitor, for example I'm using the BenQ BL3200PT atm and I can simulate whatever aspect ratio I want as well as any monitor size. I think you might be confusing a few things here though, there is no "1080p region" as such, what you might be asking is whether you can reduce the size of displayed area, in which case yes, so for example you could simulate a 27'' monitor in your 32''. In fact my BenQ can do anywhere from 19'' to 30''.

Depending on the monitor you should be able to output 1920x1080 1:1 mapped with aspect ratio maintained and no scaling - sometimes you will have problems disabling scaling though either the panel's scaler will try and enforce it or GPU/drivers not properly support it.

The S32D850T only offers 'Auto' and 'Wide' options in its 'Image Size' section of the OSD. The 'Auto' option respects the aspect ratio of the chosen resolution but will simply stretch 1920 x 1080 across the whole screen area, making it identical to 'Wide'.

There is no 1:1 pixel mapping option on the Samsung. You can easily set this in the Nvidia Control Panel so that when the 1920 x 1080 resolution is selected in game the GPU will only output 1920 x 1080 pixels with a black border around. The 'No Scaling' option. The image size will appear as it does on a 24" Full HD screen. I am not sure about Catalyst Control Centre and how that handles things as it's been a while since I've played around with that. I don't currently have my AMD system up and running to check. :(
