Hi guys,
I'm after a decent pair of earphones, sub £40. I prefer the inside ear type ones that block out all sound.

Need to have decent bass and not have a stupidly short lead.

Ant

I got some phillips ones from a high street retailer for £30 and Im extremely impressed with them, everything you just said above.

Problem with this thread is nobody can link to a site with ones on as its a competitor to ocuk!

Sennheiser CX55 Street Earphones.

Absolute gems. :D

I paid £35 for them. Many places sell them.

Crossroads Mylar X3s or XBs are well regarded, better than tatt off the highstreet.

I've got the Shure E2Cs and they're slightly light on bass but very punchy, worth a look too.

Aren't these bad for your ears ? I mean I recall some docu saying the closer the sound is the more damage you risk...
Them in ear ones I mean...

And a bit more OT:

Is it worth spending so much for earplug headphones  ? I always buy the cheapo 5 € ones :p. I mean can you really hear a difference ?

With canalphones you block a lot of external noise so you don't need them as loud.

Canalphones (I think thats their proper name) seal off your ear (like earplugs do) canal blocking outside noise, the difference is startling at first. There's a massive difference between cheap earphones and proper canalphones, the bass and isolation makes a huge difference.

Would give my backing to the Sony - the ex-90s have a very good reputation, as do the slightly cheaper ex-85s. There is a thread on here somewhere about them... I had some sennheisers before them, and although isolation is not so good (if this is a big thing for you, the sonys are perhaps not the best route to take...), the sound is much better!

There's also a big difference between canal phones and IEMs. It took me quite a while to get used to my pair of IEMs (Atrio M5) after using my canal phones (Creative EP-630) for a few months.

I got some Sennheiser CX300, earphones but i miss them quite a lot now, they were brilliant, but due to a lot of use in 2-3 months they broke but i was using them anywhere any place (haha half way down the cable it got covered in white paint).
Great earphones and picked them cheap off a auction site fairly cheaply.
I plan to buy some more but just using cheapy ones because i got through a lot of earphones.

Whats the difference between a canalphone and an IEM?

Canal phones tend to sit in the opening of your ear canal (e.g. Denon C700, certainly not cheap) whereas IEMs tend to sit deep inside your ear canal (e.g. Etymotic ER-4). I've also heard that IEMs can provide up to 23dB isolation whereas canal phones can only do around 15dB, although I'm sure these boundaries aren't set in stone for either type of 'phone.

One more thing, IEMs tend to use armature drivers, so the body of the 'phone can be made a lot smaller and doesn't prevent it from being inserted deeply into your ear canal, whereas canal phones tend to use dynamic drivers. My Atrio M5s don't conform to this generalisation, but they get around not being able to fit the body of the 'phone into your ear canal by having longer tips.
