well, that's why my old PC has been going slow :o oops. not going to reseat it though since i did that with my X6 1055t and bent every single pin and couldn't get it to go back in the socket again. :(

anyway, i need an intel cpu, mobo. something with at least 6 sata ports.

i'm not going to overclock,
i have 8GB DDR3 ready to go anyway (can get faster but this will do)
have an OCZ and Crucial SSD but might go for something bigger.... maybe
i have a 6950 flashed to a 70 so that'll still do me.
i have a case (3 actually) and storage drives.

so by my reckoning i need a mobo (pref asus or asrock - not gigabyte - had probs with them), a cpu and a cooler. i'd rather something with a bigger fan just in case of noise

now that we have a black friday sale going on, this might be the best time to shop :o

ta all :)

bremen - with the AMD cpu, the heatsink was basically soldered onto the cpu! it was running 100% for an hour just before i turned it off too. weird. i had to use sooo much force to tear the 2 apart it was crazy

also, general PC use, some light gaming, media center (most of that is the gpu anyway).

i think RJCs recomms might do - off to have a gander now.

ta lads :)

edit

that mobo has built in hdmi - what happens if you connect that to your telly instead of the discrete card? i assume that it just doesn't get used?

ordered. sod it, went for some ram too. soooo cheap. now need to sell the old 8GB of ram, the AMD mobo, the intel processor/mobo and ddr2 ram

heh, i have 2 sets of DDR2 ram now 8 and 6 GB as well as the DDR3. need to get rid at some point.

RJC - do you mean that if i connect via mobo that only when gaming the discrete gpu will be used?

lazdec - i don't blame you. for pretty much everything bar video encodes etc it still did the trick. it's just that i have a SB laptop which kicks the PCs arse and it's weird having a laptop stronger than a base unit :o

so connect onboard, install lucid drivers, connect to ati card and install ati drivers then reconnect to onboard leaving no hdmi cable connected to the discrete and leave the lucid drivers to deal with the switching?

sound about right?

for the time being, stock will do me tbh, but i have oc'd in the past so might do again - temp depending of course.

well, it's arrived. wow, cpu's are getting smaller huh!?

now deciding on whether i can be arsed putting the heatsink on or just going with the retail one. :o

i will probably. i almost took the current plate off to put the new one on. then i realised there's nothing to clamp down on the cpu. (been a long day)

RJC have you got that fan? there's no sign on the fan itself on whether it pushes or pulls when attached with the pads on teh heatsink

yea, found a review that said it's a push. no arrows that i can see though. well, installed just need to screw into the case and attach cables gpu etc. will do that tomorrow after the gym

ta for the advice mate :)

so you install the ati drivers while the hdmi cable is still in the mobo? you never connect to the ati card at all?

re: cpu - i made a boo boo with the rubber pads that made me think the screws were too short. got it in the end - but it never creaked at all. all feels solid.

one quick Q to double check - the fan cable has 2 connectors. i assume that the spare (after the 1st is connected to the mobo) is to attach another fan to control via PWM?

not to connect a power cable to? i had to do this in the past with a delta fan - why i'm asking :o

well, it's up and running. good choice on cooler - can't hear the thing even with the case side-panel off.

most of it, got a new xbox and did some fiddling and have been playing loads of halo 4 as well :o , and black ops 2, assassins creed 3 etc :D

will get it finished tonight i think. this cold is making it hard too - putting a pc together is really hard when you're in a slanket! - really, in one right now :D

well, finally took the old PC apart. piccies of the paste/fan.
