Currently remortgaging, chap asked for passport as a form of ID... that expired last month.

No bother he says, driving license and a letter would be just as acceptable.. that expired 4 years ago!

Genuinely didn't realise. I dont recall getting a letter but theres no point arguing that. Never really used the card, not been pulled etc.

So upon looking it up, I cant renew online as my passport is now out too.

Went to post office and they cant help as it's too far gone so they gave me the old fashioned form and I retook my photos etc.

Do I need to be concerned about a fine? As in if I send the form off, they realise etc. Apparently they can issue you a £1000 fine, and some where I saw if the license is 2+years out you may be asked to retake a test? Surely not as it's only really the photo that needs updating, I still have an active license to drive?

Sorry for the long one, just wanted to set the scene as it were..

Any advice appreciated.

I would expect to be fined by the police if pulled over etc. Do you k ow if your friend was done like that or directly by the DVLA as a response to it being out of date?

Thanks for the link, found that article too in my rampant search for answers :(

I rang! They are very busy, on hold 30mins+.

Wanted to confirm what I needed to send anyway.

It's only the Photo essentially that needs renewing, you have 10 years a go on that, but the license itself is still fine, I guess at a certain age maybe 70 you need to renew the whole thing.

He did say though if caught driving and unable to produce a photo license, that may incur the fine but otherwise he didnt seem to think you can get fined for any other reason so... I'll just send and hope for the best

Bugger is because of covid theres a huge delay on these and passports, on a bit of a time limit with the remortgage :(

Post office can only do it on site if it's only expired by a certain amount, he laughed in my face when I said 4 years :D

Confusing old fashioned for with a tacky postal order sent off this morning

It's a bit crap, was supposed to be hiring a car at the end August but no card, no hire :/ I assumed 3 months was plenty of time but looking at their twitter, plans might have to change

Yeah it sounds like they are, understandably, falling behind due to covid, safe distancing meaning less staff in house and so on. Just bad timing for us then really. Fingers crossed you get yours in time.

The guy I spoke to on the phone did say more staff are returning to their offices each day so may start to pick up.

I may just do my passport too and hope 1 turns up quicker than the other:/
