Hi all

As some background misses has been learning photography with a 650D for a year with the slightly dodgy kit lens and a nifty 50

I thought for Mother's Day I'd treat her to a upgrade and just dropped £820 on a EF-S 17-55mm f/2.8 IS USM with UV filter and hood

I hope I have made a good choice, seems a good do everything lens which on reading about without resorting to L money seems to cover everything in one nice bright lens, especially for a crop frame camera

Being a photo noob myself spending more on a lens than body is a weird thing...but I hope the results will be worth it

She mainly does portraits and people photos out and about....family etc

Bad choice ?

Cheers

Excellent lens, just a shame you wasted a bit of money on the UV filter... ;)

But overall she should be very pleased with it!

If you regularly shoot in sandstorms or rally driving yes, but general day to day shooting all they really do is increase flare.

On the other hand my GF uses one instead of a lens cap and I usually have a CPL on when shooting and use that instead of a lens cap. Saves time and you don't have to worry about where you put the lens cap!

I always get uv filters. Scratch a uv filter. No issue, scratch a lens....

send it in and get it serviced, or just leave it as its probably not going to make any difference to photos... The service costing not much more than a decent UV filter, or more per wisely several decent UV filters (one for each lens you have).
