I was looking at my battery consumption and it's been much less recently that before OS4.

I just stumbled upon this article

http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4211

Do I really need to close all open apps after use?

Is there some method to have them switched off automatically when i close them?

I would only close apps that may be trying to work in the background like GPS (which is a non factor on an iPod Touch).

Music apps should be fine as when you pause the music they should in theory not be using any of the background audio API's so they shouldn't cause any performance or battery hit

Only starting closing them if it becomes sluggish or you notice battery drain. Otherwise the feature is worthless. :)

It you have small enough fingers you can close multiple apps at once.:p

I have noticed battery drain and just shut down 32 open apps. Nearly all apps that were there were open.
