Open or closed headphones for VR?

Built in headphones on my CV1 were great. Had no need to change. Same for my Reverb G2.
On my Quest 2 if I’m playing something like Resident Evil 4 or Red Matter 2 for example I’ll use my Bose QC35 IIs for perfect sound and immersion. Nice and light, very comfortable. Don’t feel they’re on.
For games like Walkabout Golf it’s fine with Quest 2 built in things.

The key difference is mainly whether or not you wish to potentially annoy people around you. If you can use them in another room/on you're own, "open" all the way in my opinion, and the ones that I've tried have been a little more "natural" in how they sound.
I use open with VR (it's in our back room) and also for music. The pair of closed that I have are good VFM, but only get used with my phone and/or when I'm out and about.

Thank you everyone for your responses. I have a few earbuds and gaming headsets lying around so will see how it goes. I will also look at buying open back as this is something I don’t think I’ve tried before.

The only thing to remember with open back is that they also let in outside noise too so can take you out of the immersion.

How much are you looking to spend? personally not a fan of closed back for gaming if a game has a reasonable positional audio implementation as it tends to sound more congested compared to open back.

It's a trade off

If you can game in quiet room then of course go open back headphones, you will not get better soundstaging. But if you have a noisy gaming area then open back is not good because it will be immersion breaking for you and can annoy those around you

Depends on budget and how well they'd fit your setup but headphones like the Sony MDR Z1R have a very close to open back sound while being closed.

I made a mount for my Quest2
Much better than the terrible built-in sound.
