Open platform for ps3

Sounds cool.
So it's basically a PC now :p

I'm liking the PS3 more now >_< No way I'm paying the price they're asking though.

when do you think they will reach £225 the same as my xbox core, thats when i'll buy one *maybe*. Do you think they will reach that price before MS bring out their next console?

I don't think sony will let you do that. In fact, you can't even download free content from the net using PS3 web browser except from the stores. :(

I'll believe it when I see it. I just can't see them allowing you to install any application on it which potentially could harm the console.

Unless they mean you can install applications that they say so (very limited bunch)

I think it just means you can install all or part of games onto the harddisk, sure the IGN review mentioned that capability for the giant enemy crab game.

ManicMan, how come there is 0 PS3's sold in your sig? Hasnt it updated yet or something?

It's been fixed by Xbox360 fanbois, it'll never update and even if it does the figures will be biased :p

Sony announced a while ago that the PS3 would ship with a version of Linux. So if they are going to do that it's basically a given that it's an open platform (not 100% sure on licenses here, but I think it might even be a requirement of using the Linux kernel). But I suspect that this OS won't make use of the SPEs, only the core of the Cell chip. So anyone making software for it would only be able to use a fraction of the PS3s power. It's still pretty good though. Most homebrew apps aren't going to need that extra power anyway. It'll be enough for emulators and general applications.
