I'm looking for ways to back up a my laptop and thought that the best way would be to create an image on an external harddrive.

Does anyone have any suggestions for software to do this?

I know that there is much better support for NTFS in linux these days and that a CD could be set to boot to linux and rsync or similar (rather than creating a brand new image each time which would wear out the disk faster and take longer) but wondered if anyone knew any good guides or off the shelf ways to do this.

Ideally, the way of backing up would allow for the back up drive to be taken from its USB caddie and installed in the laptop.

Ta!

There are loads of file-based backup options for Windows, check the utilities thread.

For images you're probably looking at CloneZilla. If you download the CloneZilla Live CD it will allow you to image the drive to an external hard disk. The images I create are compressed so you'll have to have a look at some of the options (I can't remember them off the top of my head) to see if you can do a 1:1 clone that is ready to go.

The good thing about CloneZilla is that it's fast - pretty much as fast as your hardware allows.
