I have a question : I love open source, and if I was a multimillionaire, I would code all day for free on some big project I am sure I would love to be a part. My question is this :

In about 3 months time, my current contract with one of my employers (both half time) expires, and I have to find some new employment. My current job is in academia, but I am not sure if I am right for it or not. The problem I have is, as soon as I jump full time into "business", all of my scruples basically go out of the window and I have to code for food essentially, which makes me another one of these money chasing rats.

So my question is, what alternatives are there really? I don't think I am good enough to join an open source project yet, I need more experience...

Anyone here work for a company that supports foss?

Surely there's no reason why you can't be chasing the money during the day and then working on open source stuff in your free time... I think that's how 99% of foss developers can manage it.

yeah thats true... thanks :)

Try to get a job with a FOSS-supporting company. There are loads; Red Hat, Canonical, IBM, Sun, Novell, Apache, Mozilla, Cisco etc. Even if that effort fails you can always follow Gareth's advice.
