I'm sure most of you are familar with Total Annhilation, it's still up there with the best RTS's imo. Well this is an open source port to a 3D engine of the game basically. But the final goal is too create it's on game/story which there working on at the moment IIRC.
Anyway I digress, it's a free game with a decent online community. An ever growing modding community is always keeping it fresh aswell, with new maps and units being released.
Current Features
* Large battles (http://taspring.clan-sy.com/screenshots.php) limited only by the power of your computer; support for up to 5000 units.
* Large, highly detailed maps in which to wage those battles, fully 3D with deformable terrain, forest fires, dynamic and reflective water, and custom skyboxes.
* Several camera modes, allowing for anything to be viewed from almost any angle.
* Fully 3D combat in land, sea, and air, with realistic weapon trajectories.
* Many different mods, some of them originally from Total Annihilation, and some made just for Spring.
* Compatible with unit files from Total Annihilation, allowing 3rd party units to easily be moved into Spring.
* Complex 3rd party AIs, some of which are quite good.
* An extremely powerful GUI, designed to minimise unneccesary micromanagement.
* Frequent additions and bugfixes.

* New, nicer GUI.
* New scripting engine.
* Platform-Independent Lobby Client.
* Many different maps, mods, and AIs.

The learning curve can be a little harsh if a good player rushes you when you'v barely got half of a base up though I warn you.
