I have been a Linux user for a long time but fancy getting a MBA and want to know if I will need to buy software or does the Mac be have to a good open source scene.

Most open source Linux productivity software are also available for MacOS.

Second what @HACO says plus you have Homebrew, MacPorts and Fink for package management but you'll find a lot of (dedicated) MacOS apps are now paid unfortunately.

There used to be a lot more open source/freeware than there is now.

The main issue is that certificates from apple cost - so you have to disable that with opensource to run. Now days I use basic stuff on the Mac, then have a VirtualBox running linux for opensource stuff. It also stops all the buildup bloat from random libraries etc for opensource software.

Absolutely tones of open source stuff. But the question is what is it what you want to do.
