OpenGL or Directx?

Hi all,

I've pretty much always selected Directx over Opengl since I started playing PC games years and years ago. Never really given it much thought why, I just have as I was under the impression Directx was better for gaming? Is that assumption right?

I see there is a lot of talk about a new OpenGl version, how will these compare with directx?

Thanks

Most games these days will only be coded in either directx *or* opengl, so there's no real need to concern yourself over which is better - you can't choose between them anyhow.

As a gamer it's really nothing to worry about massively, aside from in terms of card purchasing choices.

..selected Directx over Opengl..

As in for programming or do you just select games based on which said API you prefer?

Back in the day I remember some games gave a choice between the two (Unreal Engine springs to mind here)..

Since then Directx pulled miles ahead of OpenGL in terms of functionality..With OpenGL 4 they're closing this gap but in terms of gaming, there's still a long way to go before it will compete viably with Directx as a modern game platform

I believe Microsoft help companies out when programming in DX. I've no sauce but it makes sense, if all games were in OGL they'd be easier to port to Mac and Linux, no?
