A disk was handed to me, and it contains a password protected MS Word document. I have no way of gaining access to the file, as it's not possible to get the password. Has anyone used an application that can open password protected MS Word files?

There are plenty of those online, just do a search on google or a torrent site. Doubt that specifics can be discussed here.

Newer versions of Office [not sure which, 2003 onwards maybe] have improved the encryption a great deal and only brute force attacks work. This is usually not practical unless the password is simple and short on the file.

Either online or Passware which is very good. Both legal ways to open a file as long as you own it and you're not really trying to crack anything that the Government or MI5 has lost recently.
