OpenOffice.org 3.0 Beta now out

Just thought some of you might be interested to know that OpenOffice 3.0 beta is now available, and it finally has a native aqua interface, so no need to use X11.

I've had a quick play with it, and while it isn't as good as Office 2008, it'd do the job perfectly and best of all it's absolutely free.

Yeah, but this always had the potential to be better since NeoOffice uses Java to integrate with Mac OS X whereas OpenOffice Aqua uses Cocoa.

Needless to say IMO the only thing Java has going for it is cross-platform compatibility.

see, this is what I don't understand about why Java is so popular. Is portability really that essential?! It'd be much more beneficial in my opinion to write platform-specific versions as Java's sluggishness just irritates me.
