Hi There.

Just wanted your opinions on OpenOffice. Is this word processor considered the best free one available? Do the documents open with Microsoft Word Processing Programs easy enough? I assume its safe and everything.

Thanks

The word processor is fantastic and the spreadsheet is nearly as good as Excel (just as good for 90% of routine tasks). The rest is a bit hit and miss for me personally but overall I'd give it 9/10.

10/10 if you are comparing value to something like MS Office.

For a free program or suite of them I think OpenOffice is pretty good. Before I got Office 2007 I used OO to convert documents to PDF.

I think that the user interface is a bit counter intuitive to use sometimes. Just things aren't where I would expect them to be. But then this is probably due to me being so used to Windows/Office that I'm expecting things to be there.

OpenOffice I would regard as 'safe'. Not sure that it opens the Office 2007 format just yet but everything before Office 2007 should be fine.

Good product for home replacement of £££ MS Office package, however in the office environment it drives people nuts. Not only because it often mangles up text and formatting of fancy MS Office docs, but also because it blows at straight forward drag and drop text/pic XMLish editing that most of my co-workers seem to do and makes very simple standard tasks overly difficult just for the sake of being different. Want example? Find someone who use mostly MS Word or Lotus and get them to change layout of document to landscape in Open Office without googling it up. ;)

A reasonable product that lets you do most things you want for free. However, given the choice I wouldn't touch it, it has nothing on Office 2007 especially if your doing long reports in Word. I refuse to use anything else at home or anywhere where I can use it legally.

Thanks for your thoughts.

I currently dont have any Word Processing software, and have resulted to using WordPad :p

Going to give it a whirl, unitil I upgrade to Vista and buy Office 2007.

Thank you

I like the fact you can get a portable version. I'm just waiting until they update it all to include MS Office 2007 formats.

I found it very very good for what it was :) And much much smaller/lighter than its counterpart.

I think where OpenOffice comes into its own is on Linux. A PC running Ubuntu with OpenOffice would be a very suitable setup for a family etc wanting a cheap PC to surf the Internet, send emails, chat on IM clients and do the odd bit of writing letters and finance management. :)

Indeed. In addition to that it's faster in that environment. On Windows and OS X it's dog-slow. On Linux it's so fast I'm always surprised when it starts. :)

Hi Again

I've created a presentation and it will not open at work :(

Anywho, I was aware they had a download that would allow me to put it on my USB pen so i could run it via the USB pen, is this still possible?

Just the Openoffice native format :)

Although I added animations and things so I was unsure if saving it in powerpoint would allow everything to work, being able to open it on openoffice will be much better
