OpenSolaris = Dead?

The brand OpenSolaris is dead because Oracle owns it now and they're killing it.

The parts that are open source have been pulled to another project called Illumos (basically OpenSolaris with a new name). The bits that aren't open source or were licensed only for use within the OpenSolaris project are being replaced.
 
Bit behind the times but anyhow, here's some of the story.

Oracle have changed the terms of Solaris (thats proper Solaris) so that it isn't free, it's a 90 day evaluation.

They've also discontinued the OpenSolaris project and any potential future 'OpenSolaris' release will be after a Solaris release - so swapped compared to how it is now where OpenSolaris contains new technology/features ahead of the commercial release.

However, since so many people have left Sunoracle the project has been forked (originally started as a core tech fork, but looks to be extending to the whole OS) called illumos (see http://www.illumos.org/) you can also follow Garrett D'Amore's blog at http://gdamore.blogspot.com/

Might take a little while but i'm sure we'll see something replace OpenSolaris.

For me, the best bit is ZFS and although it's now come to BSD's and i think Linux, the implementation is nowhere near as good.

The implementation is nowhere near as good on Linux as it needs to be run in FUSE. This is due to Sun's CDDL. We'll never see it as a "true" filesystem on Linux if the licensing issue remains.

I doubt we'll see anything big come of the forks of OpenSolaris tbh. It's pretty clear sOracle were going to do this and I'm glad they have, in a way.

ZFS is really clever. Wonder what this all means for Nexenta - the OpenSolaris kernel with ZFS and Ubuntu's user space - now that OpenSolaris is defunct?

Has anyone tried installing ZFS recently under BSD? I looked into it when they first announced it, but there's a fair degree of jumping through hoops!
