I have a machine with openSUSE 11.1 with Samba. This computer is used to store data in the office which people are constantly accessing. I set it up a week ago, but it crashes ones a day. The screen is black most of the time. One time I could see the desktop and move the mouse but now click anything. Access to the Samba shares disappear. Don't know why. Is there somewhere you can get an idea of why it crashes?

Any help will be greatly appreciated as I don't have much experience with linux :o

Specs:

openSUSE 11.1 64bit

Core2 2.7Ghz
2GB ram
Adaptec 2405 RAID PCI Express
1x120gb HDD for SUSE
2x750GB Western Digital RE3 RAID 1

I realize that I have not given much information to solve the problem... What I am more hoping for is guidance in how to find the problem. What to look for...

I am using the 64bit version of SUSE. Is this a mistake and should I be using the 32 bit version because 32bit drivers are more mature... a bit like windows 32/64bit?

I've read on more than one occasion that 32 bit is generally more stable than 64 bit at the moment.

Saying that I've had similar black screen crashes most days with Ubuntu 9.04 32 bit. Since I moved to Ubuntu 8.10 it's been fine.

Probably when the machine has been under load.

Have you tried other versions, such as SLES10? This Server version is excellent and you can also get/apply for Novell support, which is also excellent. I've set up a few file servers with Samba---all running perfectly.

May be the 32bit / 64bit issue, or an issue with your hardware it doesnt like. Did you find anything in logs about the crashes? Actually crashing like that... is quite a serious issue...

post up your messages, syslog, smbd, nmbd and any kernel logs in errors or info at least 30 mins before the crash happens.

might be able top get it sorted then, alternatively backup your msb.conf and your data shares and reinstall with centos or debian

Sorry for not replying... not been in the office for a few days. I am going to do a new install using a 32bit verson (The other one was a bit rushed). It still seems to crash around the same time... 5:30. There is no more load then than the rest of the day.
