Operating altitude

Usually to follow standards of products, the device should be able to work to certain specifications. This means they will often only test it up to that spec if it's not too important, such as this one. I doubt it'll stop working as soon as you go any higher, it just won't have been tested any higher.
 
It says that for a lot of portable electric devices if you look in the manual!

I'd hazard a guess that it has something to do with the static pressure at 3000m being 69.2% that of sea level (from International Standard Atmosphere tables). The lower pressure may cause funny things to happen to LCD panels, batteries etc so the manufactures are just covering their backs? Although i'm not sure how they'd send stuff by air freight in unpressurised holds if this were the case.

:p true, but i was thinking more along the lines of if the pressure at 3km could cause something like a battery swelling, then the pressure at 35000ft (~23% sea level pressure) would cause serious damage.
 
I happily used my touch diamond at around 3,700m last week and that is like a more compact, less gay version of an ipad so no doubt it would be fine;)
 
They may air freight in pressurised and temperature controlled boxes. We used to use these to send chemicals around the world. Doubtful though and is probably just an oddity left over no-one pays much attention to.
