Although this game was a little buggy on release and looked average in graphical terms, it brought realism by the shedload and huge combat environments (along with the ability to drive or pilot multiple vehicle types). The editor helped improve replayability once you were done with the main campaign.

Thanks to a large modding community, we have videos like these to enjoy:

Op flash is possibly the only game in history that i've been rubbish at, but still loved. The fact it was so realistic made me feel like it was ok to be rubbish at as 'that's life' instead of getting frustrated like i do with other games that i struggle with.

Never gave Arma a go, really should one day.

Loved this game, especially the edit maps option where you can create your own battle field, missions etc and the mods are great!

If only i could find my discs.............

Its not a world apart from Op flash really. Obviously you have the better graphics and some tweaks here and there but the general game is pretty similar really. You still have the terrible radio commands as well "Oh no, 2 is down!" :p

It was a totally epic simulator. There was one user made mission in particular that I remember. It was absolutely incredible. It was a platoon versus over 100 enemy, and various AFV's including a few tanks played over open ground. You started on a hill and as you broke the top I remember thinking "oh my god" when I saw the enemy platoons and vehicles in the distance. I played this mission over and over and over until I got so good at it that I could take the enemy on more or less by myself. :D I just remember the scope of it though, with the custom equipment and the sheer size of it. I had never seen anything like it at the time and to be totally honest I haven't seen anything like it since. Kudos to Op Flashpoint and Resistance in the first instance for allowing such a grand design. I really hope the sequels/pre-quels live up to the hype!

OFP is one of my alltime favorite games :) ArmA is awesome aswell despite its rough starts, ArmA II comes out early next year aswell so it should "hopefully" be coded better :)

Were they not making a new Operation Flashpoint game? I have both the original and gold versions at home and yet hardly played them. None of the clans I was in back in the day wanted to give the game a chance.

Its a long story, basically Codemasters published OFP1 but it was developed by Bohemia Interactive. They split after a disagreement and Bohemia made ArmA which in essense is OFP2.

But since Codemasters own the copyright to the name OFP2 thats what they are developing, although if you look at it tbh it looks like a open world COD game. Bohemia are making ArmA II at the moment and that looks like a great improvement on the original so we shall have to wait and see :)

Also if you want to play ArmA online sometime feel free to add me to X-Fire "22infamous" I'm on most nights playing :)

OFP was the first game that I used WASD instead of the arrow keys for movement! Had a lot of fun pitching unit mods against each other with the map maker. I could never get the multiplayer to work, though. Probably had too slow an internet connection back then. :(

brilliant game, have both the addons as well (resistance and something with the red army?) but the realism was immense, being ordered about by a squad leader, realistic military terminology as well, plus an actual map (no radar IIRC?) and a watch, tons of vehicles and weapons, steep as hell learning curve mind! plus the amount of user created content is staggering, vehicles, weapons, skins, maps, everything you can imagine just improved the game! also won't forget the amazing level editor, which was brilliant editor :) fond memories of this game, can't wait for operation flashpoint II :D

Aye, I'm currently using the T90 and M60 which are good fun to play with ;)

I had the "Adversary" armour pack for OFP with variants of those in it, the tanks would often fire and hit at ranges above 2000 metres, which isn't bad for a 2001 game engine :p

Is that sort of size explosion already in the game or have they put it in somehow? Does it effect any air vehicles if they are in the blast radius? That would be class to watch as the helicopter loses control and every has to bail out :D

Its all an addon, and I'd guess that the helicopter would be destroyed in the air ;)

the tank combat in OPF was immense, it was only game i have played with tank commander, driver, gunner, etc all working as a crew! the game didn't look too bad either, not when you consider how big the battlefields were and the view distance! i have ARMA but i never bothered with it since it 'was' buggy as hell and with graphics turned down it looked the exact same as OPF

The vehicles could take localised damage too, eg a severed track would leave your tank immobile, a strong hit to the main gun would render it inoperable, etc. Getting the first shot was a key advantage.
