Operton 165 - what is a ihs?

i have an opteron 165 that was able to go to 2.4 ghz with volts as low as 1.25 bios setting (read as 1.23).but i couldnt get anymore out of it with any voltage . 2.43ghz tops. core 0 always failed within 10 mins. so i popped the ihs of and now im test 2.6ghz at 1.325v for an hour so far dual-prime.it has a ccbwe 0550pmw stepping . im so freaking happy. temps dropped only a few degrees too. odd stuff

What exactly is a integrated heat spreader? and what would be the bad thing about removing it (unless ofc i have just shown my ignorance and it refers to something simple like the thermal paste )

Google seems to bring up a hundred "i removed it and now my cpu is great" links but no one seems to say what it actually is and looks like :s

the piece of metal on top of the chip taking it off reveals the actual chip.

i am using a sythe ninja so will prolly end up crushing the core

a simple Athlon XP mod with some squishy foam will prevent that.

bit of foam cut to size and stick on each corner of the chip,... will prevent damage to the core if done properly.

thanks , ill prolly steal the little pads off one of my old chips to see if they are the same height ^^
