Opical Drives not Recognised Win7

Sony DVD Rom and Sony/NEC Opiarc drives have a yellow asterisk in device manager and don't work. They are recognised in BIOS. Am I right in thinking this is a firmware problem.

If so how do I find what firmware I have and how do I update, or would it be better to buy a more up to date drive, if so any recomendations that work with Win7.

Where do I say everything should work? I'm looking for a solution for something that does'nt work. Is that hard to understand.

Thanks. My drives are OEM Sony/NEC and will not use the firmware updates from Sony's site. I believe they are made by Lite-On, I'm in touch with them regarding updating the firmware.
