Seems a fairly popular psu, the corsair hx1050, I recently got one as I have been really pleased by my hx850

yes it's very quiet when my systems is idle, but the instant there's any load it seems like the fan ramps up to 100% and sounds like an airplane is taking off
It will do this for the slightest bit of activity and then turn off as quick as it came on, its very annoying, it can't of had chance to warm up before the fan comes on

Is this how it's meant to be?

If this is how it's meant to be, I can't understand how they could think this is a good way to do things, I have ( or should i say did have) a fairly quiet system, this hx1050 is the loudest thing in it by a long long way

Reason I'm asking is, it's already been rma'd for another issue
Just wondering if I should ask for a refund and get a strider, or a bequiet psu instead

Also In the year or so I've used an hx850 I can't remember ever hearing it

Hi there Jfan. I'm having pretty much the exact same issue with a HX1050 corsair sent me as an RMA replacement for my (dead) HX1000.

I've contacted customer support, as I've not seem this issue mentioned in any reviews I've read. Most reviews actually praise the HX1050 for how quiet it is, so this doesn't seem right. Could be a fault I guess?

just got replacement hx1050, and its exactly the same, very noisy under any load

didn't rma it because of the noise though, it had a faulty power switch on it, was always on even in the off position

very annoying to be honest, fan should not be tied to load imo, should activate if the power supply gets warm, as it is the fan comes on the instant there is any load

for an example I just started downloading on origin and the power supply fan is on max

dont buy if you want a quiet pc

Here's the response I got from Corsair customer support;

I am sorry but that actually sounds normal for this model the fan in the PSU supports Fan less operation and as such will turn itself on and off as needed to keep the unit cool. The fan will come on at about 49 Deg C of internal temp in the PSU and turn off at about 39-42 Deg C. If you are running a moderately loaded system configuration it may display this system because it is hovering around the cut off temp internally causing the fan to turn on and off ever few min.

So, apparently, they intended the HX1050 to be this loud. I've asked them if they would consider upgrading me to something quieter if I pay the difference, still waiting to hear back from them.

I've always used Corsair PSUs, I have a few older models in other PCs and none of them even come close to the noise this thing emits when it gets going. I guess ebay is my next port of call if Corsair can't get this sorted. Either that or I'll crack it open and replace the fan. Can't stand how annoying this POS is.

Ok, so I got another email back from Corsair today. They told me they would arrange collection of the HX1050 and send me an AX1200i.. Le Happy! I guess it actually pays to be a whiney b***h sometimes, lol.
