Hey all. I recently bought an AMD R9 290 and have noticed my CPU (AMD FX 4100) is bottlenecking my system. So now I'm looking for an upgrade and would like to get everyones opinions on what would be the best one for me.

My motherboard is an Asus M5A97 Pro and these are the CPU's it supports https://www.asus.com/Motherboards/M5A97_PRO/#support

I would like to buy it from OCUK so no Ebay, Amazon ect. I know an i5 or i7 would be a far better upgrade but I just don't have the money to upgrade to Intel right now. Thanks in advance.

FX4100 and an R9 290, that's a funny one.

The best you can buy is an FX8320, but even with that you're not always going to get the most out of the card.

its pretty much the only CPU you should consider without changing your motherboard.

The FX8320/50 are still damn good and I cant see them holding back your card really, look at some of the benchies on the forums and you will see the FX cpus are holding scores decently even beating some Intel cpus.

How much ram have you got? If under 8GB then make sure you are at 8gb+

just get the 8320, the 8350 is the same CPU just clocked higher at stock. Something you can easily achieve yourself and pay less for it.

Yea, I think I will go for the 8320 then. I have quite good cooling in my case so overclocking it should be no problem. I have 8gb of ram so thats no problem. Thanks again :)
