Am I basically right in thinking this is a hatchback version of the TT? I'm throwing it into the pool of possible next cars :)

Or anyone got any ideas for any RWD/AWD hatchbacks with some creature comforts?

Only technically - the TT is a stylish, chic good looking Coupe with a rather nice stylish interior, the A3 is a dated, expensive 3 door hatchback which only really makes sense in 1.8T form.

Not really AWD though, its Haldex, so its FWD until you screw it up, then you get some power at the back to sort the mess out.

Noz has one, he can probably tell you more.

Which is why, unless it's a much newer one than mine, I'd recommend the FWD flavour. It's faster in a straight line too. No scary Haldex change bills either.

oh well, im trying to move away from fwd :|

has to be reasonably new, aircon, usable rear seats a must.

Hate, whats your pool of cars consist of right now?

The expected age of the A3 1.8T Quattro would be good too.

Budget? I got a 330d Sport last week, full of RWD-awesomeness - you should buy one. :D

There you go posting again when you nothing about the system. We had this arguement a week or so ago and you failed to come up with any reason why it was "crappy"(your words), apart from its fwd most of the time. Go out and drive the car before you give you worldy words of wisdom on things you know nothing about. It doesnt wait until the front ends in trouble before it comes in as you would know if you'd driven it. In fact if the person is so inclined they can buy uprated Haldex controllers so it is engaged more of the time giving a bigger rear end bias but thats not for everyone.

Try reading

http://www.haldex-traction.com

http://www.haldex.com

and then drive a haldexed equiped car before slating it so much.

Audi purists say it isnt proper Quattro(torsen) not that it isnt proper AWD.

And as i said before its good enough for the Bugatti Veyron.

Go on then, explain how Haldex works if you claim my understanding is incorrect.

I was under the impression it drives like an FWD car, until you begin to lose grip, afterwhich it will redistribute power to the areas which need it.

Read the links i gave you or go and look at my replies to you last time you got this wrong. Have you driven a haldex equiped car since then?

Would I be right in guessing its a tourqe distribution system? Prehaps on the Audi it is set to default FWD then to redistribute under stresses?

I dont really know but isnt this thread about views on the A3 1.8T? Opinions on what Hate should buy or shortlist as a possible buy and not how Haldex works. What ever it is :p

It is a fwd biased system that looks at all the wheel speeds, when it detects slip between front and back it starts bias power towards the rear. It doesnt wait for the front end to lose grip totally or screw up first and acts very quickly. The latest version with pre-x(not used on any audi) even engages before it detects slip based on the way it has been monitoring the driving habit. This is a very brief overview of the system, more info can be found on the links i posted if you want to know more.
