Opinions on console purchase needed.

A guy I've been talking to on MSN has found what appears to be a decent deal on a used Xbox 360 Core for £195. It comes with 5 months warranty remaining and a memory card. 12 games are included, 6 360 (godfather, gears of war, burnout revenge, DOA4, FIFA 07 and PDZ) and 6 XBOX games. It also comes with 4 months of Live.

The problem is he's going to the USA in a few weeks time, so can buy a HDD for around 30 quid if he does buy this. Another option would be to buy a PS3 in the US (I know, he's not really sure which one he wants most) for a similar price but just with 1 game.

So is it worth getting the 360 with all those games and 2 wired controllers and all the extras, or should he just not take the risk and get a ps3 and be safe?

The above is basically all his wording, I've been talking to him for aaages about this and my advice doesn't seem to be going a long way (keeps looping back to "Don't buy a 360 secondhand, it's asking for trouble") so he's requested I ask the wonderful community here. :)

Sorry if it doesn't make much sense, I'll try to explain as best I can if there is any confusion.
 
tbh the 360 is probably the better purchase, i would be less worried about buying a 2nd hand one now they have extended the warranty for RoD failures. 360's don't tend to fail on anything else, so a 2nd hand one should be good. Even then he can trade it all in and get a PS3 at a later date.
 
well if this guys had it for 7 months already without any disc scratching problems then id say the only thing likely do go wrong with it is the 3rrod problem. In which case he's got 2 years 5 months for that one, id go for it, thats a good package.

Xbox 360 has way more better games coming this year. I would get the 360 for sure. Plus he will have 4 month's of live so he can deicide if he want's to get the 12 month membership when the 4 months runs out.
 
Two questions, does he have a HDTV? Does he watch a lot of films?

If they answer to the above is yes to both then maybe he should consider a PS3 for BD films, but if it's just for games then obviousley the 360 seems the better choice at the moment.
 
Tell him to get the 360, i wouldnt get a US PS3 if it was me.

Thats a good price so he'll be sure to be impressed!

And when it breaks he can get a PS3, win win... :p
