I am comparing the AMD Phenom II X4 Quad Core 965 vs the Intel i5 2500k.

Bare in mind the AMD is £80 cheaper.

I'm on a mega budget, would the AMD be a poor buy for £70?

Thanks!

What do you want to use the computer for? and what is the rest of the system?

Pc needed for some light gaming, graphic design and mainly internet usage.
Its a budget machine and an upgrade for a well, well outdated stock machine.

Well theres this comparison - http://www.anandtech.com/bench/Product/288?vs=102

And its so easy to get a 2500K to 4Ghz± on the stock cooler, if you cant mange 4.5Ghz+ with a £25 aftermarket heatsink, then you are massively unlucky.

This.
I had mine at 4-4.2 on the stock cooler (not benching prime) and it was just about ok temp wise in gaming.
So easy to clock too. Simply changing the multiplier to 40 or 42 was all that was needed.
If you can afford the difference, do it. It should last you longer too, not that the 965be is a terrible cpu or anything.

If you can stretch to a 3570k, I'd recommend that.

Whats your budget ? you spec'd a one for £311 so i went for around same but everyone seems to be going well over?

So what is the maximum you are willing to spend on this new system?

I think if it's just that, then the 2500K is overkill. Even the X4 965 BE would probably be overkill.

I think something like this would suit:
"Primo PLUS 500a" AMD A55 DDR3 Ready (Socket FM1)
with a
SanDisk Ultra SSD 120GB 2.5" SATA II Solid State Hard Drive - (SDSSDH-120G-G25) [SDSSDH-120G-G25]

for £203 total.

My budget is around £300 so the machines well over £500 are out of the budget

I like the AMD processor because its cheap with 4 cores and a decent clock speed that can be overclocked.

Anyone fancy building a machine with this Processor near to £300 upto £350?
