I'm basically an SLR n00b, and am considering getting into it thanks to my 21st birthday present from the family. I am looking at the 350d or 400d, as my uncle has given me a couple of canon lenses from his old film SLR to get me started.

My question however is are they any good, and how much would I have to pay to get something better?

SIGMA UC ZOOM 70-210mm 1.4-5.6 Ǿ52

SIGMA DL ZOOM 35-80mm 1:4-5.6 Ǿ52

The first thing to find out is what kind of camera your uncle has, if it's an autofocus one then the lens will fit, if they're manual focus lenses then chances are they're the older FD mount and hence won't fit on a 350D/400D. If they are EF autofocus lenses it's still not guaranteed that they'll work on a new body, there are a number of Sigma lenses which do not with modern bodies. It's possible to get them altered to work, Sigma have been known to do this for free but I'm not sure what the criteria is to get it done for free.

Unfortunately I've no idea how good the lenses themselves are though.

Cheers. The Lenses are EF autofocus. Any way I can get a rough idea on what they are like based on the spec? The numbers mean nothing to me.

on the cheaper sigma lenses, it's either hit or miss wether you'll get a decent one, my 18-50 is alright for the princly sum of £81 :)
