Do you really need an i7? Are you doing anything but playing games on it?

I would buy an ssd to put the os on, and to put primary applications on rather than buying 2 2TB drives.

I would change up the PSU, maybe go for an antec or seasonic unit, and 750 watts would be fine.

Don't have any experience with the fans, but I know that Corsair AF series fans are very good, and also scythe gentle typhoons if you plan to water cool.

Oh, and for the money you could get a better case; do you really need a full tower?

I'm pretty clueless to be honest.

I will just be playing games other than standard internet browsing/watching the odd film. I wanted to get the best I could get as I'd like it to last a little while.

I don't want to waste money on stuff I simply will have no use for so appreciate any advice.

I recently upgraded to an i7 as i'm pretty sure most new games will benefit from having more than 4 cores/threads (some already do)... You could even save a bit of cash and get something like an FX-8350 which appear to be performing quite well with newer titles :).

16gb RAM is a waste, as is an 850W PSU if you don't plan on adding another GPU.

The i7 may help you with BF4 and future games. The price difference versus the i5 is more than it was when I bought it, but still just about justifiable if you can fit it in the budget.

SSDs are the greatest thing since sliced bread - get one.

I'm dong fine with 8GB RAM and see no need to upgrade it yet, and i agree you don't need an 850W PSU for a single GPU setup.

What's the total budget you're looking to spend? The spec in the OP is pretty good, but you might be able to squeeze some improvements in with more exact numbers.

Are you building yourself or buying pre-built? Do you upgrade your machines every now and then or are you buying for it to last you X number of years?

I'm using the overclockers system builder.

I was hoping for it to last a good few years but I know with computers they are outdated extremely quickly but I'm happy if the computer can keep up with new game releases for a good few years.

My budget is about £2000 but will stretch that a couple of hundred if its needed/will benefit me greatly. I'd like to go under budget if possible but definitely prefer to pay more and get what I want than save money and be disappointed.

My knowledge is next to non-existent so appreciate all the advice being given.

:)

No preference on case size, Large-ish room but would prefer smaller if pushed to choose.

No preference on colour

I do need a CD drive

Large storage needed quite a few games/music/films

Thanks!

Here's a mATX build, lovely case. Includes a 250GB ssd which will fit a bunch of games and programs on. The i7 pack comes with a h100i cpu cooler which will go in the top of the case.

RJC's build has a considerably better monitor, but with this you get a modular psu, larger ssd, more attractive case (imo) and better cpu cooler

Are you willing to build it yourself, Steve? You'll get more for your money and it isn't as daunting as it sounds - my current rig was my first build, and it all went swimmingly.

I'm prepared to give it a go if it is really that beneficial, all though I do prefer the pre-made ones as I really don't want to get it wrong!

I've never built my own computer before and wouldn't know where to start to be honest.

Well, the above specs have literally everything you need to do it yourself; apart from perhaps a new fan if you think that the stock fans are too noisy. If you have any little query then you can just ask on here!

I used this the first time I built mine: http://lifehacker.com/5827491/how-to-build-a-computer-from-scratch-lesson-3-building-the-computer There are a few things which I didn't get rom this (I can't remember what they were now mind), but those things this forum can make up for :))

Key things: Don't rush any thing, don't try and force things in place and be patient :p

Newegg have a great couple of videos on youtube, too - just search for 'Newegg how to build a computer'.

What is the difference in price if I use the overclockers system config? And try to get similar to the pc's in this thread out of curiosity?

I'm thinking about it, just want to get this right and get all the right hardware!

Thanks for all the responses so far. :)
