i found an amd opteron 144 in a good price and im thinking of gettin that instead of the 3700 i was planning to get. the opteron 144 is 20-25 pounds cheaper than the 3700 and the owner had it o/c to 2.75ghz . i need ** "expert" opinion on which one is the best deal for me. the system im trying to build is going to be :
Sapphire Pure Innovation Mobo
AMD Athlon 3700+ skt 939 or AMD Opteron 144 CAB2E 0548FPMW skt 939
Powercolor X1800XT
2x Kingstone 512mb DDR 400Mhz
Hiper Type-R 580W Modular PSU
i need a reply A.S.A.P as i might buy the opteron if u recon thats a better choice.
thanks in advance :D

How is the mobo you picked for overclocking?

If you go with the Opteron 144 you need a mobo that can run at >300Mhz FSB without problems as the multi is 9x

To paraphrase Dutch guy, have you done any research to indicate if that motherboard is any good for overclocking?

If it's not, then the 144 is probably not for you.

Alternatively, you may want to choose another motherboard.

/edit, beaten by a minute!

I have just looked at two reviews, one came to 305Mhz and the other to 302Mhz so I would go for a San Digo 3700+ because the 11x multiplier gives you more options in overclocking

ah what the heck :P £20 more aint gonna hurt me when i bought a £311 graphics card
is that review also for the sapphire mobo ? or is it just for the CPU ? specs say that the mobo was built on gamers options e.t.c dunno if thats a lie just to sell it but if its true then it **** be ok with o/c feautures

so thats ** way of saying buy the opteron 144 and the sapphire mobo or buy the sapphire with the 3700 ?
I would get a SD 3700+ because it has a 11x multiplier, that way you do not need a very high FSB to get a good CPU speed.

hmm..interesting :p i forgot to say that the opteron i found was overclocked to 2.75 ghz at 1.45V :p that make any difference now ? :D

It is a good chip, but for 2.75Ghz you need a mobo that can run at 306Mhz (9*306Mhz = 2754Mhz) and 306Mhz is no means guaranteed with the Sapphire mobo.

If you get a dud that will only run at 260Mhz it would mean the max speed the Opteron can run at is 9x260 = 2340Mhz, with a SD 3700+ it would mean 11x260 = 2860Mhz

damn  if the sapphire motheboard wont do then im thinking of DFI LANPARTY UT NF4 ULTRA-D . but i dont know if the SLI motherboards are OK with ATI cards as they are SLI. will that motherboard do ? the card i got is Powercolor X1800XT

ok thanks :D motherboard decided :P now the cpu :p im puzzled on which one to get. i can get the opteron in 1-2 days or i the 3700 in 5 days :( and i keep hearing ppl gettin 2.9ghz + on those 3700  im leaning towards the 3700 :p

The latest batch of 3700+ SD's seem to be getting awesome clocks.

Is the one you're talking of getting brand new or a 2nd hand one like the Opty?

3700 is brand new. the opty was used for 3 weeks. but ive decided on getting the 3700 as its new,o/c same or better than the opty and its only 10-20 pounds more :D *puts his money in the bank and orders 2morrow* :D
