Hi, I'm tempted to try to build myself a cheap overclocking PC (never done it before and fancy giving it a go) and think I know where to get a second hand opteron 144 for about 60-65 quid - is this still a good chip and would it be worth it at this price? What sort of overclocking potential does it have?

edit:

details of the chip
AMD Opteron 144 UP Socket 939
Stepping and week of CABNE 0545

He has overclocked it to 2.7 on air, using a vapochill micro cooler (which is inc in price + poss some AS5), so seems a pretty good deal :)

Just confirmed getting it all for that :D

Well cooling wise I was gonna use the vapochill thingy for the cpu. I'm still a noob at this though and was basically gonna ask here if I needed any more. I was looking to get an MSI K8N Neo4 Platinum mobo from another chap on the for sale forums here. Beyond that I was gonna look into it more closely next weekend (away this weekend).

That a good mobo to use with it? Any advice on other bits to use? I've already got a complete tower sitting on my floor with a load of old stuff in it, was looking to gut that for parts as much as I could (case, drives, hopefully hdd and psu will be OK) so think I just need ram and gcard (and possibly hdd and psu, ain't checked yet) and then I am ready to rocknroll. :)

I appreciate why this has just been moved as it was mainly discussing the cpu but it's now expanded into other hardware so if it could possibly be moved back I would much appreciate it :D

Cheers.

I haven't got to that stage yet - haven't had a proper look inside my old computer yet, so dunno what I've got. I know I had my psu replaced about 4 months ago in my old one but it was from the local shop and dunno if they've given me a cheapo one - tbh I didn't ask, knew I was getting a new comp for christmas so just wanted something to keep it ticking along until I got the new one.

he's a lucky boy getting it from me for £65, as I need to get rid of it :p

I had 2.7 Stable on the vapochill micro (shoddy cooler, but it's the only HSF I had at the time) but then the OEM x2 3800 arrived so I caved and bought one of them!

Chip is good, had it working 3 weeks ago before I put the x2 in :)

You will need a better PSU proabably, a 480W should do you fine, would reccomend a Tagan :)
