im just about to thrash a new opteron 144, CACJE, manufactured 0508 (i think, its not infront of me atm) its only on air, under a freezer64, what is the general census that i will be able to get out of it?

i have had an older CAB2E for which i had high hopes but it barely crept above 2.65ghz before it flaked out and nothing would help me get beyond that
 
oh its sitting in a test rig, which is a DFI ultra which has no trouble and the memory is gskill 4400LE which i have verified will go to 310mhz from previous OC's, psu is an ocz, its had a few cpu's in it now, the last was a 4000 that went to 3ghz in the exact same setup but with a water block on it, i am confident the rig wont hold up the cpu :]
yeah not sure bout the week number, bought it off ebay and it arrived this morning so i was trying to read the fuzzy number off the pic he sent me but that was my best guess, anyways i just wanted to get some general numbers to aim for after my cab2e which was plain dissappointing really
 
well i have a freezer 64 atm as the water is now in a dedicated rendering system so its out of action for thrashing CPU's these days, if there is an air cooler that isnt too expensive that will give me far more performance than the freezer i might shell out for it

well im in the process of OCing this chip now, thats the maximum stable OC i can get on air at the moment, its at 1.48volts so im thinking if i up the volts a little more maybe i can get over 3.1ghz, it runs very cool, im not sure if thats because i took the IHS off or not, but it peaks at about 45 degrees
not bad considering its default is 1.8ghz and it only cost me 30 quid :D
 
Its not very hard to take the IHS off in my opinion, if you go through that sticky on the forum and follow that its a good guide, ive taken it of this and my xp4000+ and they were both relatively straight forward. First time was a little more scary as i wasnt sure how much pressure to apply and how far in to insert the blade. As it happens single core athlons actually have a lot more space between the inside edge of the IHS and the little chips surrounding the core, so you have more leeway than when doing it to a dual core chip.
I bought a pack of double sided razor blades from tesco's, wrapped some layers of selotape over one side so i didnt cut my fingers, then put about 3-4mm of the blade corner into the breather hole on the chip and pushed all the way round. The corners have by far the most resistance, i went round twice to make sure it was all cleanly cut, second time round it pretty much flies round to i didnt need to apply much pressure, then i got out my stanley knife, as its thicker and less bendy, and now the rubber is cut it fits under fine, and used the edge of it to pop off the IHS.
This opteron was making good contact as it turned out, and the IHS looks relatively flat but i guess its one less useless piece of metal between core and heatsink :)
Oh also in that sticky is a list of compatible coolers, although if you have a DFI board i dont think its an issue as all their sockets have a lower lip on them which wont catch a cooler. Im using an arctic freezer 64 and its definately compatible
