Hey All,

As the title says I am thinking of upgrading my Opteron 146 which is a CABYE 0540 FPAW stepping and does 2.8ghz on stock volts since day one to a Opteron 165.

First of all, will I see much difference if I go from single to dual core and what are my chances of getting it to 2.8ghz like my current 146.

I am mostly a gamer but do a bit of encoding aswell.

Thanks a lot.

I'd say it's not worth it. Games are almost all single threaded atm, so by the time they're multi-threaded you'll be able to buy a dual core Core 2 Duo system with the money you've saved up.

I'd save up, and perform a more worthwhile full system upgrade. :)

Well if you can get hold of a good stepping then it is worth it.
Week 0609, 0610 and 0617 are supposed to be mental chips which hit 3.0ghz on stock volts.
If you can get hold a chip that does 2.8 or higher then go for it. The 165 are seriously cheap now with some retailers selling them BOXED with AMD warranty for just over £100.

In games you wont see much difference, but in everything else yes :D

I didn't realise how cheap they were, I'd say go for it. I went from a 2.6ghz 146 to a 2.9ghz 165 and it was definately worth it.

It depends on the stepping you get though. If it's a CCBWE then you'll be very lucky to get back up to 2.8ghz. If it's a CCBBBE or CCB1E then you'll be laughing all the way to 3ghz. :)

But in games you've already go a 2.8GHz CPU, so simply having 2 at a similar speed isn't going to make any difference.

I still say save up more and go Core 2 Duo, or a full system upgrade. :)

I'm in the same boat as you Hyper.

I don't see any point in upgrading for awhile yet. Won't really see any amazing improvements from dual core for awhile now.

By the time your opteron starts to grind, it may just be easier to go for whatever the latest tech is at the time, thing is you really shouldn't have to think about it for awhile.

Overlooking games at the moment..what about normal windows activity eg. multitasking how big an improvement is it going from single to dual core AMD?

You'd see a good improvement in multi-tasking.
