"Upgrading" from a 4200+ as fancy some Opteron lovin, but not sure if it's worth paying that little extra for the 170 and a 10x multi?

Advice chaps?

what are you looking to do with this processor?

in terms of real-world results for a casual user, the difference between a 165 and 170 is nonexistent - the 165 can generally give you a good 2.6/2.7Ghz, while the 170 might generally give u a marginally better results, perhaps 2.7/2.8. if you are price-conscious (ie. what you do is not important enough for you to spend $XXX for an extra ~100mhz), then the 165 is the way for you to go.

they're both great processors, and at their fullest oc potential on air (assuming a good aftermarket hsf), the difference is extremely marginal

The 170 is nice as a 10x multi makes overclock so damn convenient, but if you have board that clocks nicely, same with ram, I'd probs save the money and go with the 165. (coming from a former 170 user)

Having had 2 x 165 and 1 x 170, it's all about the stepping.

If you get a good stepping it will oc really well. It's worth paying a little more for a known good stepping regardless of if it's a 165 or 170. Actual prices of the two are similar anyhow.

Both will do about the same speeds with your mobo so go for the 165. The 170 is only benificial if the motherbaord it is used in cannot handle high fsb's.

hmmm, theoretically that the case but I've had 3 cores

The 170 clocked best, much cooler that the 165's at the same speed. Talking 10C cooler under load

one of the 165's was very hot regardless and didn't clock all that well.

the other 165 was better but still needed a lot of volts to hit 2.7Ghz +

when I look at the stepping info,

The poor 165 was not a well rated stepping
The better 165 was an average rating
The 170 was a well rated stepping for both 165's and 170's so I'll say again.... get a good stepping

Any 06xx 165 basically. My 0615 EPMW is at 3.06 with 1.525
I have exactly the same chip/steeping and run 2.9Ghz at stock volts. As said above, stepping is more important than chip version, and never know the stepping before you buy. So, if you are taking a gamble, go for the lowest cost option.
