Hi there, just been looking at some processors, and it has come my attention that a lot of people seem to have opterons (why is this ?)

I am upgrading soon and had decided on getting the x2 3800 but now i have seen the opteron 165.....i know that the opteron has more l2 cache (how much difference does this make)

bearn in mind i will be pairing it with a x1800xt/7600gt, 2 x 1gb RAM, asus a8n sli, 260 wd SATA

i won't really be overclocking (dont really know how, though i might dabble :) ) and will be mainly using my computer for, final year uni work (video editing/photoshop) and also for playing games.

I would like my computer to last for a while, what would you clever people reccomend i go for......i was gonna use the freezer 64 with my x2 3800, so really i was just thinking in terms of price...... (as an x2 3800 with freezer 64 is as much as an opteron 165 with the stock fan.....)

thanks in advance

Kiz

The L2 Cache makes little or no difference from what ive heard..

and most people buy the opteron because its a server chip and is meant to be the cream of the cr**, they run at slightly lower temperatures than the x2's and can clock a lot more..

Some of the x2's clock very well though :)

Thanks,

the main reason i asked this question was because, in terms of performance if the opteron was better i would get that based on stock levels.......because (just thinking in terms of price) an opteron is the same price as an x2 3800 + freezer 64...... ;)

sorry to be a pain in the A**

If you dont plan to overclock I would recommend you get the 3800.
90% of users who buy the opterons do so for their stellar overclocking potential. Just like me, I happen to run my 165 at 2.7ghz on air @ 1.425 volts ;)
FX60+ performance for a 3rd of the price.

It was mentioned in this thread, opterons are 'server' cpu's. Low volt stable long life solutions.

I have a good mate who got his new build from here after I recommended him to buy here ;) He got the X2 3800+, Sapphire X1800XT, the Antec P150 etc.
He texted me with the following: "It's a beauty, GG!" :)

Either cpu is a good buy tbh.

tbh, even if you do buy an X2 3800, that doesn't mean you're screwed for clocking. many of the recent one's have been shown to clock very well.

obviously, not to the extreme levels that opterons have managed but still pretty good.
