Opteron 165 overclocks

I thought that too, but as this thread is full of high overclocks I thought it was a good place to ask

Could some of you experts please give me a bit of advice about overclocking.

I have read some documentation online already but I'd prefer (as I'm a bit slow) for someone to just post exactly what settings I should change in the BIOS to achieve a particular speed, I can then have a play and gain a bit more understanding.

My kit is as follows

Opteron UP 165 Dual Core 1.8GHz
2GB G.Skill HZ DDR PC4000
DFI NF4 Ultra-D
Seasonic 600W PSU
Arctic Freezer 64 Pro
As my Multiplier is 9x I have already upped the FSB from 200 to 250 (as my RAM can take it) and so I'm currently at 2.2, but I'm not sure how to proceed from there.

set ram to 150 divider to give some room on clocking. ht multi 3x, up fsb to 285 -290, 2.6ghz, leave vcore at stock for now , it should boot and run at that speed, or start at lower fsb
run prime95 on each core to test, if stable then up fsb by 5-10 at a time increasing volts when needed.

mercyless - thanks for the help.

Even at 270 it kept failing prime but was rock solid....

I now have it at 290 all is well (had to use 110% on vcore), everything runs fine, except it fails the prime test... Any advice?

I think AMD have a history of prime problems? Might be wrong (was told this by an intel employee  )

Wasn't 100% stable on that so im running 2565mhz at the mo, no problems.

Asus A8N32 SLI x16 / 2x 1GB PC4000 G.Skill and an Evo 120 cooling it!

good going.
have you set up prime95 to run on each core? if not check here
for setup.
or seach for sp2004, same as prime95 but with better info , you can run it twice, set cpu affinity for each core. no need to setup like prime95.

did you raise vcore to bootup or for prime95 and whats your stepping?

I did, it failed at that 2.6 speed, not on this 2565 though

not changed the vcore for bootup no, not sure what the stepping is 2 secs i'll find a pic

Whatever I do Prime SP2004 fails on anything above 250FSB (2.2Ghz), but the machine is perfectly stable at 290 FSB (2.6Ghz) - runs all day no problems !
Temp reaches 45 at full load, and idles at around 33

Chip is

Whats the best way to continue ?

OK, thanks, will give that a go.

I have since discovered that Prime is failing only on core 1 and is stable on core 2 !

It's normally the way, one of my cores is slightly weaker than the other (core 0). Just remember to watch the temps as Opty's dont like heat too much (does any cpu? :p) and with this warm weather it does make overclocking a little harder. My temps have gone up 3-5c when dual priming which can make a once stable rig not pass prime. If the ambiant temp is 28-30c it makes a big difference. Not much you can do about it too, still warm weather does not last long in this country, always a thunderstorm around the corner! :D
