for gaming purpose, is it worth me upgrading my system to a core duo, or just get a 8800gtx card? Basically what extra speed woud I gain, from putting a 8800gtx from my sys(see in sig) to a core duo sys?

Ive still got 2gb of mem, cos with 3gb it slowed things down. And if I got a 8800gtx, would you say I would be able to run crysis on max settings at 1280x1024 or 1024x768?

At 1024x768 the difference between an overclocked e6600 and an overclocked opty will become quite apparent.

The big question, can I get away with buying a less powerful card and still run crysis on the max settings, if you guys think a 8800gtx is a overkill?

So what card would you recommend me to get, so there wouldnt be a bottleneck, and I can run crysis in high detail? 2900xt???

Cos it seems abit stupid getting a 8800gtx if I cant use all its speed, plus £400 is a awful lot of money for me.

"1GB HIS HD 2900 XT PCI-E(x16) 512Bit 400MHz GDDR4, GPU 743MHz CrossFire" ???

Edit : That isnt even out yet...opps:D Will it be out in 2 weeks?

Edit : is out sorry, getting confused wth the GT cards, so back to my question, would this still be slowed down by my cpu, and how would crysis run. Might be getting the sammy 22inch lcd before crysis comes out too, cos Im guessing it will look much better on there, then on my 3yr old 19" viewsonic lcd?

Below is the 3dmark score for an SLi'd 8800GTS 640's setup with your cpu only difference being its clocked @ nearly 3GHz

to see more comparisons goto v|v

http://forums.overclockers.co.uk/showthread.php?t=17752540 this thread is being added to but currently waiting on SOLDNER-MOFO64 to update it.

04.....10,975 | Crowze | AMD Opteron 185 @ 2991mhz | SLi'd 8800GTS's 1280MB

Imo this is just above a base score for an overclocked (3Ghz+) C2D with a single Nvidia 8800 GTS 320 setup.

I would oc mine more but the temps r rubbish with this cpu, 60 -65c load on 1 of the cores.. my fx55 clawhammer was much cooler 54c load

I don't know how that opteron matches up to the X2 4400+ but running a bunch of benchmarks at 1280x1024 with an 8800GTS we had to drop back to the above X2 before we saw any framerate drop off (against an E6300 and an X6800).

Interesting because I have an Opty [email protected], 2GB and 8800GTS overclocked.

I struggle to run World in Conflict at comfortable frame rates at 1280x1024.

My opty is single core, I cannot believe that the 8800 is struggling, surely the CPU is the bottleneck here?

yeh its the cpu, cos I had a fx55 running at 2.78, and running dirt during the 6-8 car races it was real chuggy, unplayable even. Anyway I put it down to my x1900xt card, but it wasnt, because when I got the dual core cpu, dirt ran loads smoother in 6-8 car races. It still runs a tad chuggy in places, but im hopeing a new card will completely smooth it out,
