Which would be better an Opteron 185 or an FX 60
Looking at the specs of each of them they appear to be bassically the same
the only difference i can see is the opteron is a denmark core and the fx60 is a toledo core
They both should clock to 3Ghz or more by most of the reviews ive seen
but the fx 60 still seem to carry a permium price
i can get an opteron for a shade over £100 but the FX 60 still seem to be going for around £200-£300
As i mainly use my system for gaming would i see any benifiets from using the fx60 over the opteron 185

The FX60 is multi unlocked I believe.

Personally I wouldn't spend more money on a socket 939 CPU, what you have is good enough for that platform.

yah... rather upgrade... that £100 could be jused to buy a E6750...

that said, IMO the prices for the FX60 have always been excessive... i'd take the opty in your shoes

I've got an Opteron 185 and its great. I've not found the need to try overclocking yet as its been fast enough at stock for everything I've tried.

They do seem to fetch a premium though unless you can find one second hand.

The main benefit of the FX-60 is the unlocked multi, and the overclocking freedom that provides.

TBH I'd probably save the money and put it towards a new Mobo/CPU/RAM combo. 939 as a platform is now pretty dated and benefits from a faster processor are quite limited.

yeh, would cost less than 140quid for a p35 board, e2160 and 2gb of ddr2-800. Its what i did moving from socket 939.

The combo should do atleast 3ghz on air and would easily outperform your 939 system

It would be bad advice for anyone to suggest you buy either of those two chips to replace your sweeet Amd X2 4400+ Toledo?

What are you thinking?

You may as well throw the money away, seriously if you want to improve your gaming and you have money to spend then seriously consider buying a new INTEL Core2 based system and selling your old kit. If you are a total sloth lord and can't be arsed then maybe buy an nVidia 8800GT to replace your aging 7800GTX, that will be a nice improvement in your gaming.

i'm still happy with my 939. cant see my self upgrading yet 10500 in 3d mark 06 ( on vista) keeping me happy. All games so far run great on high settings @1280x1024

Just my 2 cents but you could get an opty 165 for around half the price (£50) of a 185 :) Just need to be able to hit high fsb for 3g.
Dont think you would see much/any improvemt in games though :(

Best option by far would be to get a 8800GT for not much more than the cost of an opty 185. Then upgrade rest in near future :)
